Mangalore Education Enhancement Trust, which has conceived this project, is a registered charitable education trust. It is formed by a group of socially committed individuals under the leadership of Sri S. M. Rasheed, a successful entrepreneur and a well-known philanthropist of Mangalore. Apart from this institution founded by him, he is also closely associated with several other educational, cultural and charitable bodies imparting yeoman service to society.
Inspiration
Education forms the foundation of a healthy society. This is especially true of women's education. An educated woman is an empowered woman. With good schooling she will not only be able to lead an independent life but also be a great source of strength for her entire family. In the Indian context social transformation goes hand in hand with education of the girl child. Unfortunately education of women continues to remain a neglected issue, more so in rural areas where nearly 70 percent of our population resides.
Need
Realizing the urgent need for educating women in the rural areas, Mangalore Education Enhancement Trust has established the Melkar Women's Pre-University & Degree College. The vision of this institution is to provide quality education to the girls of this rural area and contribute to the economic and social development of this backward region. The college is situated at Melkar, a village close to Bantwal. This remote and underdeveloped hamlet had virtually no educational infrastructure for women, and this pioneering venture is the first endeavour to focus exclusively on educating women.
Initiatives
The college is being built on a 3-acre plot purchased by the board of trustees through their own funds. The campus comprises academic and administrative blocks and a spacious playground. The college offers pre-university and degree college education following the curriculum of the relevant statutory bodies and university. Education is imparted by well-qualified and experienced faculty members, and the infrastructure is supported with spacious, well-furnished classrooms, well-equipped science laboratories, a well-stocked library, fully-fledged sports and co-curricular facilities, and a canteen.
